This, like most expansive moors, can be a wild place. The morning I took this image I wanted to capture the isolation one can feel walking on these moors. Imagine being one of these trees, open to the winds that blast in off the North Sea, especially in winter. I love this place out of season, when you can walk for miles without seeing anyone else. One can truly feel solitary in our overpopulated isle.
Whitby as a fishing port emerged in the middle ages, when it became an important centre for herring fishing and whaling fleets. James Cook learned his seamanship here.
Filey has a great beach. It is a small town on the North Yorkshire coast that still retains some of it's old world charm. In winter it is quiet, but metamorphoses in summer to a town heaving with tourists.

The first Roman Signal Station was discovered in Filey, situated on Carr Naze and revealed after a cliff fall in 1857.

In 1993/4 due to increasing erosion, the Filey Station was re-excavated by York Archeological Trust, supported by Scarborough Borough Council. Although most of the site has been eroded the remains are still visible if you walk along Carr Naze.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05512195975989436520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571904962531533120.post-91359223280089291872013-08-04T07:54:00.000+01:002013-08-04T07:56:48.431+01:00Bempton Birds

Bempton RSPB reserve is an amazing place. The breeding season of the birds is progressing now and so, whilst it is a great place to visit all year round, you need to plan a visit as soon as possible to see nesting puffins, razorbills, common guillemots, gannets (Atlantic gannets), kittiwakes (black-legged kittiwakes), fulmars, feral pigeons, meadow pipts, skylarks and many others.

The cliffs are chalk and are over 100m high in places. They run form Flamborough north to Filey and are a major feature of the local coast. There are walks along the top of them from the RSPB reserve.

For those interested in the image above it is a 10 shot multiple exposure to show the flight paths of the birds taken using a Nikon D800E and 70-200mm lens mounted on a tripod. Photography here can be difficult as the birds are not always close. The use of a 500mm lens is best for close ups of the birds and if you visit when the wind is right the fulmars and gannets 'hover' off the edge of the cliff, accompanied by the gulls. To get good close-ups of the auks, which is possible from Bempton, but you have to be lucky and spend a long time at it usually, you could take one of the boat trips from Bridlington or from Flamborough North Bay.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05512195975989436520noreply@blogger.com0Bempton, East Riding of Yorkshire YO15, UK54.131186 -0.1785899999999855928.6091515 -41.487183999999985 79.6532205 41.130004000000014tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571904962531533120.post-68713733431512487262013-07-30T06:34:00.000+01:002013-07-30T06:37:23.071+01:00North York Moors to Ravenscar

Much of the landscape is the familiar poor acid soils which are formed by the slow erosion of sandstone and are deficient in nutrients. They are less permeable to water, impeding drainage and encouraging the formation of bogs. Sphagnum moss and cotton grass abound and as the cold acid waters allows little decomposition of organic material the dead sphagnum moss gradually accumulates to form peat, which raises the levels of the bogs and they dry out. Heather then invades the area. Large areas of the moors are now covered in heather, bilberries and grasses growing on thick layers of peat.

The traditional fishing boat of the Yorkshire coast is a Coble. These are designed to be launched and landed bow first on the beach. They are clinker built - a method in which each strake or plank overlaps the next to provide maximum strength with minimum weight. They have a shallow, flat bottomed aft section and a flat, raked stern which assists waves in either lifting it off or drifting it up onto the shore. The deep bow steadies the boat and prevents it swinging round in the breakers.

Having spent a few days in London a couple of weeks ago the images are now edited. It was in the middle of the heatwave, which has just finished with the thunderstorms just beginning. The sky was a constant blue with not a cloud to break up the monotony (perhaps the worst sky for a photographer). So I decided to go out just before dusk and walk the streets. I started at Canary Wharf and then Surrey Water before using the Thames path to the Millennium Bridge.

This was a day when thousands of people descended on `Scarborough as the Red Arrows were displaying. The facilities were said by many to be inadequate. Those of us who live in the area and carry out our life in Scarborough on Saturdays regretted having to go in and out of the town that day.

When I was free all the available spaces were taken and so the family and I went to Filey and I set up to photograph the whole display from there. This was thought out because the sun was likely to be right where the planes were flying - and so it happened according to friends who based themselves on the beach or in the town. I also wanted the castle in the background.
Why? Because it is challenging photographically. You have to find a way to depict the bad weather as well as the place you are photographing as well as protect yourself and your gear.

I spent a week in London in May and have just about finished selecting the images I like for the website. Most of the week was dull, with non-variable grey sky. However a couple of days it really rained. I managed to protect the camera under an umbrella and tried to get some shots that showed Londoners continuing about their business. Here are some of these shots.
I used a Lensbaby to blur the edges and increase a feeling of misery which I heightened by developing the images dark.
I am heading to London again now and will continue my look at nature and how it interacts with the capitol. As well as how a city uses nature in the landscape. There is a lot of coastal erosion in this area and with all the wet weather we have had and the freezing nights the coastal paths are extremely slippery.

The car park at Thornwick Bay is closed as it is on a field and that is basically just a pool of mud.

Whilst taking these images I went full length and injured a finger, which I caught in my tripod. That is one of the pitfalls of photography - you watch the gear more than yourself and when you fall you usually look after the camera first - if you have time to think. Certainly the last couple of times I have slipped - on wet rocks and mud - I have saved the camera in preference to me. Daft, but essentially reflex.
We are waiting to fly back to the UK today.

This is our second recent visit to the capitol city of Italy and it was very different from the last. Not only was the last in May when it was hot and dusty, but this was in winter when there was rain, cold and even temperatures around freezing. We had thunder too. Unlike last time the hotel was slightly further out from the tourist sites and I shall outline the lessons from this when we return. In fact I have several lessons to point out about travelling as a photographer with a project and images in mind. My aim was to capture the people of Rome, the tourists, and how they contribute to the city. The impressions I got of Rome this time were noise, chaos and graffiti and dirt. I hope to portray this more in my images than the last trip where I aimed to look at the romanticism. Both trips I hoped to portray the juxtaposition of the history and the modern.

We spent the weekend in Keldy Forest in North Yorkshire. Having driven there in driving snow by Saturday morning it was so deep that the road was closed. This was very exciting for the kids. From my perspective I had a camera and a tripod and was hoping to capture some minimalist and dramatic snowscapes.

Photographing the open spaces that are accentuated by the snow is of course an exposure challenge and some of the images here were shot 3 stops overexposed, with the snow being a great minimaliser. The forest itself was stunning with some of the tree trunks covered in patches of snow.

Beware walking on soft snow that has fallen on ground that is not frozen. I have heard of photographers getting stuck in mud under deep snow, and falling, thereby dropping their gear, and cameras do not like a bath in snow.

Beware the cold reducing battery power and therefore make sure you have enough with you.

Be aware that the exposure is difficult and therefore check your histogram or bracket - in general add light.

Make sure your tripod is steady. This can be difficult in deep soft snow that has fallen on soft ground. The only tip I have is to push the tripod legs into the snow and ensure it is steady before you expose the shot.

Remember that walking in deep snow is tiring and so be aware how far you are going and do not allow yourself to become so engrossed in the beauty of the landscape to forget where you are and what you are doing.

I spend a lot of hours by the sea photographing the coast, usually taking long exposures. I am often asked for tips on my approach and how to do it. So Here are a few of the common tips I pass on.

1. Know the tides.
2. Know where the sun will be.
3. Make sure you have suitable footwear.
4. Have a bag that protects your gear from the sand and make sure the bag is put down well away from the surf and out of the range of the waves. Remember the rogue wave. Rucksacs/backpacks can be a problem as you can get coved in wet sand. The Lowepro Flipsides are good to prevent this or use a shoulder bag.

5. Use flat feet for your tripod or rest the legs on pebbles. I usually do the latter as I forget the feet or do not want to carry them.
6. Watch the weather. I have been caught when I have been so engrossed in the scene and I got drowned by a rain storm. Beaches can be very isolated and have no protection. I always carry waterproofs in my bag, but even so it can be miserable.
7. Unless you want people, dogs or footprints go to isolated places, go very early or as the tide recedes.

I had remained close to home as I had ordered some new kit from one of the top UK photographic retailers with a large internet presence based on the east of the island and paid for it to be delivered on a Saturday. Waiting in all day I found out that Parcelforce could not find my house, despite the fact that they had the same address as usual and had delivered here many times before. The delivery services are so important to online sales as the image of the company one purchases from is damaged by the poor service that many of the couriers provide. Suffice to say I am considering purchasing from another company now that uses a different carrier and expect a refund of the extra money spent to get a Saturday delivery.

Back to the pleasures of life - Hunmanby Gap like most of the Yorkshire coast is collapsing. There has been a major collapse just beneath one of the churches in Whitby - easily seen from the pier and I have so far photographed cliff collapses in Filey and here. I have been documenting the erosion photographically for several years now.
Hunmanby Gap is usually quiet and has fewer dog walkers than many of the beaches in the area. Therefore one can do long exposures more easily and there are fewer footprints in the sand. At low tide there are many different natural beach features to use as foregrounds, including some coloured pebbles and stones. As I like calm muted colour sand monochromes I concentrated today on the flow of water from a 'stream' through the sand.
I use it to relax and convey calm, but until now have not particularly displayed this side of my image making. I have always taken images that try to provoke thought and emotion and this year will be taking fewer images of the documentary type of landscape and displaying more of the images I have been making for myself. Therefore I will be displaying colour as well as monochrome. However I am not a great fan of the somewhat cliche over saturated colours of the majority of colour landscapes, although some of the natural skies can be very bright at times.

This is one of a series of images I am working on inspired by The Muse Terpsichore. I love the light and reflections in this. Some of the sandy beaches on the Yorkshire coast are flat enough to have a sheen of water that is great for reflections and I often use this in my images of the coast. On this day the beach was full of people, mainly walking their dogs. The south end of the north bay is usually quieter and has areas of wet sand that reflect and I knew I would be able to grab this image. I like the slight blur in the people which helps to anonymise them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05512195975989436520noreply@blogger.com0Scarborough, North Yorkshire, UK54.283113 -0.3997520000000349754.208938 -0.5611135000000349 54.357288 -0.23839050000003498tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571904962531533120.post-39244909622031675012013-01-01T18:43:00.000+00:002013-01-04T18:46:04.508+00:00New year on the beach

Another holiday season over and the beaches were crowded on New Years Day with the traditional walk on the beach. This was increased this year on the Yorkshire coast because of the terrible weather and the first day we had seen sun for over a week, indeed the first day with no rain for longer than that!
