18 June - Filey

A walk along the seafront with the family. Someone had obviously been using a vehicle on the beach.

It was sunny in Filey, but there was rain over Bempton causing a beautiful rainbow.

A coble at Coble Landing

The coble is a boat that has evolved on the east coast to allow navigation in and out through the rocks. It was originally thought to be of Viking origin, but it is more likely that the Viking boat building techniques were adapted to improve an already existing design.

14 June - Muston moths

Minimum temp 11.6 Centigrade.

11 species of moth overnight. Here is a female buff ermine (Spilosoma luteum) - compare this with the males shown on 31 May:

This is the first pale-shouldered brocade (Lacanobia thalassina) of the year in the garden.

12 June - Muston moths

Min temp 6.1 Centigrade.

The cold night must have kept the moths in. There were 7 species, with this light brown apple moth (Epiphyas postvittana) being new for the year.

11 June - Flixton

On the way home I was drawn to this field of poppies just east of the village of Flixton.

10 June - Muston moths

Min temp 10.8 Centigrade.

Epiblema cynasbatella

A new micro moth for the year - Epiblema cynasbatella - and 2 ingrailed clays (Diarsia mendica mendica) (the first of the year).

09 June - Muston moths

Min temp 10.4.
A couple of new moths for the year:

A burnished brass (Diachrysia chrysitis)

and a gothic (Naenia typica). This is a rather worn sample.

This garden carpet (Xanthorhoe fluctuata) shows how camouflaged they are as it rests on a wall.

Shuttle-shaped dart (Agrotis puta)

Of note in the bird world was a common buzzard (Buteo buteo) over the village (Muston). This is the first I have seen here in 4 years. There is a pair of little owls (Athene noctua) nesting in Muston also and it was a pleasure to see them feeding young yesterday.

08 June - Muston moths

Firsts for the year included a rivulet (Perizoma affinata), a garden carpet (Xanthorhoe fluctuata), a flame (Axylia putris) and a chinese character (Cilix glaucata). There was also a silver ground carpet (Xanthorhoe montanata), 3 common marbled carpets (Chloroclysta truncata), and a poplar hawkmoth (Laothoe populi).

Rivulet (Perizoma affinata) - this is common in open woods and road verges throughout Britain. It is distinguished from the small rivulet by a single indent in front of the white band rather than 2.

Chinese character (Cilix glaucata) - named after the pattern on it's side within the brown markings.

All in all there were 12 macro moth species and 2 micromoths, the latter including the first small magpie (Eurrhypara hortulata) of the year. This was despite it being colder than in the last week with the minimum temperature of 9.4 Centigrade.
